Description
This CD brings together some of George Gershwin’s most beloved and enduring works, performed by distinguished artists closely associated with Hollywood’s golden-age orchestral sound. Pianist Leonard Pennario — celebrated for his crystalline technique and natural feel for the American idiom — shines in both Rhapsody In Blue and the witty, rhythmically infectious Variations On ‘I Got Rhythm’, the latter conducted by the legendary Alfred Newman. Felix Slatkin leads the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra through a vivid account of An American In Paris, capturing all of Gershwin’s cosmopolitan energy and melodic invention. Rounding out the programme are the Second Rhapsody and a Porgy And Bess Medley transcribed by Greig McRitchie, making this a rich and well-rounded survey of Gershwin’s genius in a single disc…
