Description
This CD gathers some of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s most beloved orchestral works in performances by two titans of the British conducting tradition. Sir John Barbirolli leads the Philharmonia Orchestra through all four movements of the Symphony No. 5 in D — one of the composer’s most serene and spiritually searching works — while Sir Malcolm Sargent conducts the quietly rapturous Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis and the ever-popular Fantasia On ‘Greensleeves’. The inclusion of ‘The Wasps’ Overture adds a lively, characterful contrast to the programme. Together, these recordings offer an excellent overview of Vaughan Williams’s distinctly English voice — rooted in folk tradition yet reaching toward something timeless…
