Description
This CD gathers a selection of chamber works by Franz Joseph Haydn, one of the defining architects of the Classical style whose influence on the string quartet and symphonic form remains unmatched. The disc moves through contrasting moods and tempos with characteristic Haydn grace, from the lyrical Adagio Cantabile – Vivace Assai opening to the energetic Allegro Di Molto. A particular highlight is the Wind Quartet Divertimento No. 1 in B Major, known as ‘Choral St. Antony,’ a melody later famously borrowed by Brahms for his Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Taken together, these pieces offer an accessible and rewarding portrait of Haydn’s chamber writing at its most inventive…
